Nicola is a PhD researcher at the University of Stirling’s Centre for International Publishing and Communication. Her research focuses on the intersection between contemporary book publishing and digital media environments, aiming to better understand how creative activities on social media platforms are transforming publishing practices. She previously completed an MA in English Literature at the University of St Andrews and an MLitt in Publishing Studies at the University of Stirling.
Beyond her research, Nicola is a dedicated disability advocate. For nearly a decade, she has contributed significantly to the work of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, combining her passion for community involvement with her belief in the power of lived experience. She has served on multiple advisory groups for the Trust, such as the Youth Advisory Group and Involvement Group, amplifying the voices of those within the community. Her dedication to promoting diversity within higher education is evident through her active involvement with various committees, including Advance HE’s Disabled Student Advisory Group and the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities (SGSAH) Doctoral Researcher Committee. As a chronically ill researcher, Nicola is committed to advancing educational equity and is excited to join the Disabled Leadership Network (DLN) to help ensure that the path into, through and beyond higher education is more inclusive, transparent and accessible for all.
In addition to her advocacy and academic work, Nicola volunteers as a tutor and mentor, supporting individuals from underrepresented backgrounds in both the publishing industry and academia. She also works as a freelance editor and proofreader, drawing on her professional publishing experience and commitment to empowering others. Outside of work, Nicola enjoys reading, exploring new restaurants and experimenting with new recipes.
